Hey Central Alberta . . . I get it, this Winter has been crazy. I’m sure most of you would agree with me that the warmth of Summer – kicking back with a frosty drink on the patio in shorts and flip flops – can’t come any sooner. But the reality is, winter will be here a little longer . . . and we might as well enjoy it!
Winter has some of my favorite outdoor activities (skating especially!) and Red Deer is filled with fun events and to do’s for the whole family during these frosty months. So, take advantage of weekends and snow days by checking out all there is to offer around our great city.
Bower Ponds is the place to get your skate on in Red Deer. When the water freezes, a skating rink appears, and a wide selection of Hockey and Figure skate rentals become available. First step, rent skates for the whole family. Next, grab the little ones and first-time skaters skating aids to get them racing around the pond in no time. Did you leave something at home? Not a problem! They also have a selection of skate laces, skate guards, lace tighteners and helmet repair kits for sale.
If the weather is just a little too chilly to be out on the frozen pond, then you definitely want to check out their fabulous new Board Game Café. Whether you are a casual player or a competitive strategy mastermind, they have a large selection of over 225 board and card games for you to play. Their game nights are a great place to come with a group of friends to crown your next victor, or by yourself to meet others who will greet you with a friendly smile and healthy competition. Bonus, their cafe offers a variety of hot foods, snacks, and drinks!
Red Deer offers more than 30 km of groomed ski trails within City boundaries. Within those options, I highly recommend Heritage Ranch; it is home to a stunning walking and cross-country skiing trails that will get the whole family out and active. Looking for something more leisurely? All Winter long, Heritage Ranch also offers magical sleigh rides through a Winter wonderland decorated with more than 20,000 sparkling lights.
For those looking to forgo the cold, plan a date night (or a gal’s night out!) to a fun and educational wine tasting workshop; you will get to sample five to six different wines and enjoy a unique tasting experience.
The winter months don’t mean you have to be trapped indoors until the snow melts . . . get out and get active, Red Deer! But, before you go, make sure you are stocked up with all your Winter gear essentials, you won’t want to be caught without your gloves with these temperatures! Luckily, Bower Place has you covered: Mountain Wearhouse will get you geared up head to toe for all your winter adventures. Mom, Dad and all the kids can find new winter coats that are lightweight yet good to go in -30 degrees, as well as gloves, toques, snow pants, and boots . . . everything you need and more!
