Introducing Sensory Backpacks for a Stress-Free Visit

At Bower Place, we believe in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all our visitors. We understand that families with children who have sensory processing disabilities often face unique challenges when venturing out for a day of shopping or leisure. That’s why we are thrilled to introduce the Sensory Backpack program in partnership with Variety the Children’s Charity and the Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity.

What is the Sensory Backpack Program?

The Sensory Backpack program is designed to provide support to children and youth living with sensory processing disabilities. We have sensory-friendly backpacks available for visitors to sign out free of charge while they are at our location. These backpacks contain various tools and fun activities that can help children with sensory processing disabilities better self-regulate and control stress and overwhelming feelings they may experience during their visit. Our primary goal is to enhance the guest experience for families and children living with sensory processing disabilities.

Why are we doing this?

Children and youth with sensory processing disabilities often struggle to filter out external stimuli, such as loud noises and bright lights. This can make outings challenging for both them and their families. The Sensory Backpack Program is our way of showing support and care for our community members. We want to make sure that their experience at Bower Place is as positive and stress-free as possible.

Where can you pick up these backpacks?

You can find the sensory backpacks at our Guest Services location in the food court. They are available free of charge for families who need them. Our staff at the desk will be happy to assist you in signing one out. A piece of photo identification must be provided prior to using these backpacks.

Can anyone sign out the backpacks?

This backpack program is designed to support children with sensory processing disorders, such as autism. We trust that families will use the backpacks appropriately.

What if an item is missing when returned?

You may be charged for any missing or damaged items in the backpack. Please take proper care of each backpack and do not steal items.

What information does the customer need to give us to sign out a backpack?

To sign out of a backpack, customers will need to provide a photo ID, name, phone number, and email address.

We are excited to launch the Sensory Backpack program in collaboration with Variety the Children’s Charity and Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity to make Bower Place a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone. We look forward to providing a more stress-free and enjoyable experience for all of our visitors and their families.
