Stand  Tall, Stand Out

Date: March 5, 2018

I love being in this day in age where it has become the norm to express yourself through clothing and accessories in whatever way you want! I have always had a love/hate relationship with my style, never really knowing where I fit in. In my young teens, I loved baggy t-shirts and hoodies and I would wear the same pair of blue jeans literally every day. In high school I was all about the graphic t-shirts, usually ones with band logos or cute anthropomorphic cartoons (my favorite was a white shirt covered in clouds that all had different facial expressions).

In addition, high school saw my short, but cringe worthy, “goth” phase where I wore all black all the time (my mother was not a fan of this phase). My awkward phases aside, I can always remember wanting to dress and look like everyone else in my school – who wouldn’t want to be dressed in the trendy, in style clothes? However, whenever I would go shopping I would always be pulled towards the clothes and styles that were out of the ordinary. It wasn’t until I reached adulthood that I decided that I wouldn’t let what was “in trend” define how I would dress day to day. I guess I like to follow the famous phrase: “Why fit in when you were born to stand out”!

Now when I go shopping I look for pieces that suit my out-of-the-ordinary style, like “mom jeans” from H&M, men’s section boat shoes from Spring and my favorite hair accessory, a knot wrap, from the most unexpected place, Lush! In the end, what I have learned about my style over the years is simple: having no style is a style!
