Tablescaping Tips and Tricks

Summer is here! Now more than ever, people are eager to welcome friends and family back into their homes. You might be pulling out your old table linens and deciding that it’s time for an upgrade. Bower Place has you covered with some great indoor and outdoor tablescaping ideas!

Colour Theme

Hudson's Bay Bower Place cushions

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with where to start, we suggest finding one piece that you love and building from there. When shopping at Hudson’s Bay in Bower Place, we fell in love with these pink, yellow, and black outdoor cushions. We based the rest of our design and colour scheme from this when preparing for the upcoming Tablescape session. Tying in elements of black and gold paired with the soft yellow and pinks gave our table a romantic, elegant feel. Try pairing neutrals like white and cream with a pop of colour like Fuschia (think watermelon) or bright yellow (think lemons) this summer.

Add Dimension

Give your table dimension by adding varying heights. Try using a pedestal platter (this one’s from Hudson’s Bay) to display a charcuterie appetizer on the table. If you don’t have a platter, you can create your own by turning a bowl upside down and setting a plate on top. The varying heights will help the table appear fuller.

Create a Glow

The Patio Store Bower Place Fire Table

Create an ambiance for your table with low lighting. Candles are one of our favourite ways to create a soft glow as the evening light fades. We love the candle options from the local shop: Pretty Made Things.

If you’re outdoors, try patio string lights strung up on a railing, pergola, awning, or umbrella. Pick up an outdoor lantern from Marshalls and add a votive or pillar candle. Smaller lanterns can be added as a table centrepiece, and larger ones can be placed around your patio table. If you’re looking for a new outdoor dining or conversation set, The Patio Store has so many options to choose from. They also stock fire tables which add warmth and soft light to your outdoor space.

Natural Elements

Add colour and elegance to your table with natural elements. Using flowers and fruit can be a beautiful and inexpensive centerpiece that can be tailored to meet the current season’s fauna. It’s also an easy way to add texture and colour. Feel free to go out into your backyard or neighbourhood and snip wildflowers or grasses. Look for pinecones, branches or evergreen stems. Arrange them by laying them down directly on the table and in small vases or jars. If you have small potted plants that fit your table theme or colour scheme, use them!

Cozy Vibes

Hudson's Bay All Season Eco Throw

If you are hosting your friends outdoors, try adding pillows or blankets to your chairs to create a comfy, inviting table where people will want to linger. Layer a throw over the back of a chair so that guests can cozy up under the blanket if the weather gets cooler as the night progresses.

Two trends that we are currently loving are gold flatware (these are from Hudson’s Bay) and champagne coupe glasses. Both are reminiscent of the days of 1920s “Great Gatsby” style parties. Gold cutlery adds a certain sophistication to your tablescape and can be found in either matte or shine finish, depending on your preference. Coupe glasses or also called “champagne saucers”, differ from your typical skinny flute-style glass. Serve up your favourite bubbly, a mixed cocktail, or even dessert in these stylish glasses.
