Support  Your Local Makers

Date: March 11, 2021

Here’s an idea of how!

Jenn, the demonstrator for our upcoming DIY wreath workshop on March 13, is the Owner/Designer at Simply Beautiful Creations and Co-Owner of Pretty MADE Things, a lovely store in Bower Place filled with artisan goods to treat, eat, decorate, and delight.

Her favourite part of handmade is the time and energy each artist takes to create a quality product. She believes when you support handmade, you are really purchasing a small part of the artist’s heart while supporting a local family, business, and economy.

Her love of handmade started about three years ago after making her first wreath for her door and a few for her friends. Her son was in grade one at the time, and she found more time for herself. She also experienced difficulty in working away from home due to her husband’s work requirements. So, she started sharing her creations on Facebook and within markets. The happiness and joy that each wreath brought to her customers in return brought much delight and excitement to her, too.

So, why not start her own business? This would then become a pathway to providing for her family in a flexible way and bringing happiness to her customers.

About one year later, after a personal struggle with anxiety and depression, she found crystals and was drawn to their healing energies, even pursuing her Crystal Healer certificate in 2019. Naturally, the next item to be added to her portfolio of artisan goods was crystal jewellery. Candles, soy wax melts, soy candles, and hidden jewellery candles were to follow.

Her dream was always to open up a store where local, handcrafted products can be purchased throughout the year, but she knew she couldn’t do it by herself. Over the years, she met amazing local vendors at markets and from selling her products in Central Alberta.

The opportunity presented itself to have a booth at The Great Indoors Market in 2019, and she decided to join forces with five other local makers. The support and working relationships made during this time were amazing, and they knew they needed to continue to work together. Their visions, dreams, and passions for handmade aligned and Pretty MADE Things was born. The rest, as they say, was history!
